South Coast Iconic Places: Point Dume
Point Dume: Natural and Recreational Treasure of Malibu Coast
Located on the Malibu Coast, Point Dume’s rocky peninsula forms part of the Santa Monica Bay, one of the world’s most popular coastal destinations. Millions of visitors come each year to surf, visit tide pools, swim, fish and kayak. Point Dume’s kelp forests, canyon and headland must be protected for the benefit of the people and wildlife that depend on the area’s rich waters. Sea Life of Point Dume
Point Dume's tide pools teem with octopus, anemones, urchins and sea stars, and its coastal waters are home to halibut, rockfish, black sea bass, rays and thresher sharks. Historically, Dume’s kelp forest has been the largest in southern California, providing food and shelter for a variety of sea life, including sea lions, grunion, and spawning squid. Migrating grey whales often stop off and feed here.
Why Preserve Point Dume?
Point Dume’s sea life have been declining over the years as fragile ecosystems have suffered from overuse. Catches at well-known spots like Big Kelp Reef and the Paradise Cove Pier are down, matching overall declines in southern California where the catch value has dropped 40 percent since 1990. The ocean is under pressure from overfishing, coastal development and climate change. Protecting Point Dume will allow sea life and habitats to recover so people can continue to enjoy its beauty and bounty.
