Dear Governor Brown, With California’s coast and ocean generating $22 billion in revenue and 350,000 jobs each year, smart and science based management of this critical resource must continue to be a top priority for our state. I am writing today to respectfully ask that you support the continued creation of underwater parks, or marine protected areas, off California’s coast under the Marine Life Protection Act Marine protected areas are proven tools for protecting sensitive wildlife and ecosystems, boosting resilience and productivity to ensure the sustainability of these resources, and the businesses that depend on them. Investing in scientifically designed marine protected areas will pay dividends in the form of a healthier ocean and coastal economy. California now has an unprecedented opportunity to complete the nation's first statewide network of underwater parks. The state has already put protections into place around the Channel Islands and the mainland coast from Point Arena to Point Conception. The Fish and Game Commission has approved a plan for the South Coast, scheduled to be implemented January 1, 2012, and will consider adopting a system of marine protected areas along the far North Coast that enjoys the broad support of both fishing groups and environmental organizations. When completed, this statewide network will protect California’s most iconic ocean areas—like La Jolla, Big Sur, and the Farallon Islands—while still allowing fishing to continue on nearly 90% of the coast. In short, it is a win for all Californians. Completing a statewide network of marine protected areas will help ensure that our robust coastal tourism economy continues to flourish for generations to come. It will also help to bolster the health of California’s fisheries and fishing fleets. Please act swiftly to implement this historic conservation effort for the benefit of all Californians, both present and future. Sincerely,
