Underwater Parks Day - Northern California

Saturday, January 19th 2013 is California's fifth annual Underwater Parks Day -- the perfect day for celebrating our other state parks. If you live in Northern California, there are lots of opportunities to get in or on the water, and learn about local sea life through  exhibits and lectures. Event Details

Aquarium of the Bay, San Francisco
Saturday, January 19th--Noon - 4:00pm
Experience California’s underwater parks through the lens of Marc Shargel of Living Sea Images. Slide show and lecture featuring underwater photography at San Francisco’s Aquarium of the Bay beginning at noon, along with activities for kids throughout the day in the Aquarium of the Bay’s Bay Theater, and a short program of MPA focused films at 4pm. Free with admission to the aquarium.

Visitors to Pier 39 are also invited to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the arrival of sea lions to Pier 39. Learn more about these iconic inhabitants with free, 20-minute walking tours on January 18-21, hosted by interpretive naturalists from Aquarium of the Bay and The Marine Mammal Center. Tours will meet at the Sea Lion Statue near Pier 39’s entrance plaza, and will begin at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Free. Participants will also receive 50% off of same-day admission to Aquarium of the Bay.

Bay Area Discovery Museum, Sausalito 
Saturday, January 19th--9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Bay Area Discovery Museum joins with Ocean Conservancy to celebrate the fifth annual Underwater Parks Day. This is a great time to introduce kids to the wonders of the California Coast. It is also a day to celebrate this unique and beautiful place where we live. Passage of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) led to the preservation of underwater marine areas like Point Reyes, Drake’s Estero and the Farallon Islands for future generations. A special story time and drop-in Shoreline Exploration Program will focus on the animals that live on the coast. Start time – 9am with activities throughout the day.  Free with admission.

Bodega Marine Laboratory, Bodega Bay
Friday, January 18th--2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Bodega Marine Lab will be offering guided tours on Friday afternoon of their laboratory facilities and aquarium, with information on hand about local marine protected areas.

Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, Manila
Saturday, January 19th--Noon - 2:00 pm
Join Ocean Conservancy and Friends of the Dunes for a celebration of our newly implemented Underwater Parks! As of December 19, 2012 the North Coast is home to a network of marine protected areas. We will have photos and videos, activities for kids, snacks, and weather permitting a walk out to the Samoa State Marine Conservation Area, just north of Friends of the Dunes property.  Free.
